Two Rabbits and One Carrot

A gentle sharing story for ages 4-6 about two rabbit friends who find one big carrot and learn that sharing makes a snack taste even better.

Key takeaways

  • Sharing can turn one treat into twice the fun.
  • Good friends look for a fair way to make everyone happy.

Two Best Friends

In a sunny meadow lived two little rabbits. One was named Hazel, and she had soft grey fur. The other was named Pip, and he had one floppy ear.

Hazel and Pip were best friends. They hopped together. They played hide-and-seek in the tall grass. And every morning, they went looking for something yummy to eat.

One bright morning, they hopped over to the old garden by the fence.

"I smell something good," said Hazel, twitching her nose.

"Me too!" said Pip, twitching his nose too.

One Big Carrot

They dug in the soft brown dirt. They dug and dug. And then —

Pop!

Out came one big, fat, juicy carrot. It was the biggest carrot they had ever seen. It was orange and crunchy and smelled delicious.

"A carrot!" cheered Hazel.

"A carrot!" cheered Pip.

But then they both stopped. There was only one carrot. And there were two hungry rabbits.

A Little Tug

Hazel grabbed one end of the carrot. "I found it first," she said.

Pip grabbed the other end. "No, I smelled it first," he said.

They pulled. They tugged. The carrot stretched between them.

"It's mine!"

"No, it's mine!"

Then Hazel saw Pip's floppy ear droop down low. And Pip saw Hazel's whiskers go all sad and wobbly. They both stopped pulling.

"I don't like this," said Hazel softly. "Tugging isn't fun. And you're my best friend."

"I don't like it either," said Pip. "Friends shouldn't fight over a carrot."

A Better Idea

Hazel thought hard. Then her eyes lit up.

"I know!" she said. "What if we share it? We can break it in half. One half for you, and one half for me."

Pip's floppy ear popped right back up. "That's a great idea!"

So they put the carrot down. Crack! They broke it gently in the middle. Now there were two pieces, almost exactly the same size.

Hazel gave the bigger-looking piece to Pip. "You can have this one," she said kindly.

Pip smiled. "Thank you, Hazel."

Crunch, Crunch

The two rabbits sat side by side in the sunshine. They each held their half of the carrot.

Crunch, crunch, crunch.

"Mmm," said Hazel. "This is the best carrot ever."

"I think it tastes even better when we eat it together," said Pip, with his cheeks full.

And it was true. When you eat all alone, it is just a snack. But when you eat with your best friend, it is a little party.

The Happiest Meadow

When they were done, Hazel and Pip lay back in the warm grass. Their tummies were full. The sun was bright. And nobody was sad.

"Tomorrow," said Pip, "let's find another carrot. And let's share that one too."

"Yes," said Hazel. "Sharing is much more fun than tugging."

From that day on, the two little rabbits always shared whatever they found — every berry, every leaf, and every big, juicy carrot. And they stayed the very best of friends in the whole sunny meadow.

The gentle lesson: Sharing can turn one small treat into twice the fun. Good friends always find a fair way to make everyone happy.
