The Smallest Robot in the Workshop

In a busy workshop at the edge of town lived a little robot named Bolt. Bolt was the smallest robot there. His wheels were small. His arms were short. Even his beep was tiny: beep.

The bigger robots could lift heavy boxes and reach the high shelves. Bolt could only roll along the floor and sort little screws into little jars.

"I wish I could be brave and helpful like the big robots," Bolt sighed. "But I am too small. Brave is for big robots."

A Cry from the Roof

One windy evening, a sound drifted across the workshop. Mew... mew...

It was Pip, the workshop kitten. Pip had climbed onto a tall stack of crates near the broken roof window, and now she was stuck. She was too scared to jump down, and the gap to the roof was open and cold.

The big robots rushed over. But they were too heavy! Every time they came close, the crates wobbled and creaked. Creak. Wobble. If a big robot climbed up, the whole stack would topple — and Pip would fall.

"Someone light needs to reach her," said the tallest robot. "Someone small."

Everyone turned to look at Bolt.

One Small Step at a Time

Bolt's gears went cold. His warning light blinked. I'm scared, he thought. What if I fall? What if I make it worse?

But Pip mewed again, and Bolt knew he had to try.

He did not rush. Bolt was good at small, careful things — that was his gift. He found four flat crates and stacked them into a little staircase, testing each one. Steady. Steady. Then he rolled up, one step at a time.

His sensors trembled. The wind whistled through the window. Bolt did not stop.

At the top, he stretched out his short little arms. "It's okay, Pip," he whispered. "I've got you."

Pip stepped onto Bolt's arms. Slowly, oh so slowly, Bolt backed down the crate staircase. Step. Step. Step. And then — they were safe on the floor!

What Brave Really Means

The whole workshop cheered. Beep! Beep! Hooray!

"You were so brave, Bolt!" said the tallest robot.

"But I was scared the whole time," Bolt admitted.

The old repair-robot smiled with her warm yellow eyes. "That, little one, is exactly what brave means. Brave is not feeling no fear. Brave is doing the right thing even when you are scared."

From that day on, Bolt never again wished to be bigger. He knew that the smallest robot in the workshop had the biggest heart of all.
