Dropping the e Before Suffixes
Learn the spelling rule that drops the silent e before -ing and -ed, so bake becomes baking and hope becomes hoping. A fun lesson for ages 6-8 with games.
Key takeaways
- Drop the silent e before a suffix that starts with a vowel
- bake becomes baking and hope becomes hoping
- Keep the e before a suffix that starts with a consonant
The silent e at the end
Many words end in a silent e: bake, hope, ride, smile. You do not hear it, but it changes the word. When we add an ending, that silent e sometimes has to go!
The dropping rule
Drop the silent e when the suffix starts with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u). Then add the ending.
- bake β bak~~e~~ + ing = baking π§
- hope β hop~~e~~ + ed = hoped π
- ride β rid~~e~~ + ing = riding π²
- smile β smil~~e~~ + ing = smiling π
- make β mak~~e~~ + er = maker π οΈ
The silent e steps aside so the new vowel can do its job.
Keep the e for consonants
If the suffix starts with a consonant, keep the silent e.
- nice β nice + ly = nicely π
- hope β hope + ful = hopeful π
- care β care + ful = careful β οΈ
- safe β safe + ly = safely π¦Ί
A handy table
| Word | + suffix | Drop e? | New word |
|---|---|---|---|
| bake | -ing | yes | baking π§ |
| ride | -ing | yes | riding π² |
| hope | -ful | no | hopeful π |
| nice | -ly | no | nicely π |
Spot the vowel
The trick is to look at the first letter of the suffix.
- Starts with a vowel (-ing, -ed, -er, -est)? Drop the e.
- Starts with a consonant (-ly, -ful, -ment)? Keep the e.
Practise
Try these. Say the new word out loud:
- love + ing = loving β€οΈ
- use + ed = used β
- brave + ly = bravely π¦
- shine + ing = shining β¨
