What is a consonant?
You know the vowels: A, E, I, O, U. All the other letters are consonants. There are 21 of them!

A consonant makes a sound at the start of a word. Say the sound, then the word:
- B says "b" — Ball ⚽
- C says "c" — Cat 🐱

- L says "l" — Lion 🦁
- M says "m" — Moon 🌙
- N says "n" — Nest 🪺
- P says "p" — Pig 🐷

Consonants and vowels work together
Words need both! A consonant plus a vowel make a sound we can read:
- c + at = cat 🐱
- d + og = dog 🐶
- s + un = sun ☀️
