Minibeasts and Bugs

Meet minibeasts for kids: ladybirds, snails, worms, spiders, bees and ants. Learn what bugs eat, where they live and how to find them, with a fun quiz.

Key takeaways

  • Minibeasts are tiny animals like bugs, snails, worms and spiders
  • An insect has six legs; a spider has eight legs
  • Minibeasts live in soil, under logs, in grass and on leaves
  • Bees help flowers grow and worms help the soil

Tiny animals everywhere

Look closely in the garden and you will find a whole world of minibeasts! A minibeast is a tiny animal. It might crawl, wriggle, hop or fly. Some live under logs. Some live in the soil. Some sit on a green leaf.

Let's meet some of them.

The ladybird 🐞

A ladybird is a little red beetle with black spots. It has six legs, so it is an insect. Ladybirds are friends to gardeners. They eat tiny bugs called aphids that nibble plants.

The snail 🐌

A snail carries its shell on its back like a tiny house. When it is scared, it hides inside. A snail has no legs at all. It slides along on a soft, slimy foot and leaves a shiny trail.

The worm

A worm is long, soft and pink. It has no legs and no eyes. Worms live in the soil and wriggle through the ground. As they dig, they help air and water reach the roots of plants. Worms are good for the garden!

The spider πŸ•·οΈ

A spider has eight legs. That is two more than an insect, so a spider is not an insect. Many spiders spin a sticky web to catch flies for their dinner.

The bee 🐝

A bee buzzes from flower to flower. It drinks sweet nectar and carries yellow pollen on its furry body. This helps the flowers make seeds and fruit. Without bees, we would have far fewer apples and strawberries!

Go on a bug hunt

Put on your boots and become a bug detective! Gently lift up a log or a big stone in the garden or park. What do you see? You might find a woodlouse, a beetle or a worm. Count the legs. Is it an insect or a spider? Always be gentle, and put the log back where you found it so the minibeasts keep their home.

Minibeasts need safe homes too. Find out more in Animals and Their Homes. To see who eats whom in the garden, read Food Chains and Ecosystems.
