Shapes All Around Us

A friendly early-years geometry lesson: learn circles, squares, triangles and rectangles, count their sides, and spot shapes in real life.

Key takeaways

  • A circle is round with no corners
  • A triangle has 3 sides and 3 corners
  • A square has 4 equal sides; a rectangle has 4 sides too
  • Shapes are everywhere around us

Shapes are everywhere

Look around you. Shapes are hiding in lots of places! Let's meet four friendly shapes.

The circle

A circle is round. It has no corners and no straight sides.

⚪ Think of a ball, the sun, or a wheel.

Trace a circle in the air with your finger. Round and round!

The triangle

A triangle has 3 sides and 3 corners.

🔺 Think of a slice of pizza or a party hat.

Tri means three. So a triangle always has three sides!

The square

A square has 4 sides. All four sides are the same length.

🟦 Think of a window or a cracker.

The rectangle

A rectangle also has 4 sides. But two sides are long and two sides are short.

▬ Think of a door, a book, or a phone.

Count the sides

Here is a little table to help you remember.

Shape hunt!

Now it is your turn. Go on a shape hunt around your home.

  • Can you find a circle? Maybe a clock!
  • Can you find a triangle? Maybe a roof!
  • Can you find a square or rectangle? Maybe a TV!

Well done!

You know four shapes now. Great work!
