Plan with Purpose
A strong lesson plan is more than a schedule of activities—it is a deliberate design that connects what students should learn, what they do to learn it, and how you know they learned it. The templates on this page are built on backward design and tight objective–activity–assessment alignment, so every minute of class time serves a clear purpose. Each template is presented as a fill-in structure with clearly labeled fields you can copy directly into your own document, learning management system, or shared drive and adapt to any grade level, subject, or modality.
What Makes a Strong Digital Lesson Plan
The instructional-design principles every template below is built on
Backward Design
Plan in three stages: (1) identify the desired results (objectives and standards), (2) determine acceptable evidence (assessment), and (3) only then plan the learning activities. Designing the assessment before the activities keeps the lesson focused on what truly matters.
Constructive Alignment
Every activity should help students reach a stated objective, and every objective should be checked by an assessment. If a task does not map to an objective, cut it; if an objective is never assessed, you cannot confirm learning.
Cognitive Load & Pacing
Break content into manageable chunks, model new skills, give guided then independent practice, and check understanding before moving on. Time each block so the plan is realistic rather than aspirational.
Inclusive by Design
Build in multiple means of engagement, representation, and action/expression while planning—not as an afterthought. Every template below reserves explicit fields for differentiation and accessibility so inclusion is never skipped.
Writing Measurable Learning Objectives
Use observable Bloom's taxonomy verbs—avoid vague verbs like "understand" or "know"
Remember & Understand
Verbs: define, list, identify, label, recall, describe, summarize, explain, classify, compare.
Example Objective:
"By the end of the lesson, students will be able to summarize the three stages of backward design in their own words."
Apply & Analyze
Verbs: apply, demonstrate, solve, use, calculate, differentiate, organize, examine, contrast, categorize.
Example Objective:
"Students will be able to apply the order of operations to solve multi-step expressions with at least 80% accuracy."
Evaluate & Create
Verbs: evaluate, justify, critique, recommend, design, compose, construct, develop, produce, formulate.
Example Objective:
"Students will be able to design an experiment to test one variable and justify their choice of control."
The A-B-C-D Structure
A complete objective names the Audience (the learner), the observable Behavior (a Bloom's verb), the Condition (tools or context), and the Degree (the success criterion).
Fill-in Template:

Template 2: Flipped Classroom Lesson Plan
Students encounter new content before class so class time is reserved for application and feedback.
Pre-Class → In-Class → Follow-Up
Before Class (asynchronous):

A live video-conference session with frequent engagement to counter screen fatigue.

A week-at-a-glance plan that gives in-person, synchronous-remote, and asynchronous learners equivalent paths to the same objectives.

How to use this rubric
Name 3–5 criteria drawn directly from your learning objectives, then describe what each performance level looks like in observable terms. Share the rubric with students before they begin the task so it doubles as a guide, not just a grading tool.

- Start from the objective, not the activity: rewrite the objective first, then keep only the fields that serve it.
- Right-size the timing: adjust each block to your real period length and trim anything that won't fit.
- Match the modality: swap in the synchronous or blended structure when you move online.
- Reuse and remix: save your filled-in plans as a personal template library and version them by date.
- Keep a reflection field: after teaching, note what to change so the next version is stronger.

Detailed enough that a colleague could teach from it and that you can defend every activity's purpose. Consider:
- Always include: measurable objectives, the assessment that checks them, timing, and required materials/technology.
- Scale to context: a new lesson or a substitute-ready plan needs more detail; a familiar routine needs less.
- Keep the inclusion fields: differentiation and accessibility notes are worth the few extra lines.
The goal is a plan that keeps you aligned and flexible, not a script that crowds out responsive teaching.

- Standard: a single in-person or online class session.
- Flipped: when content can move before class so class time is for application.
- Project-Based: a multi-session unit with an authentic product.

You can mix structures—for example, use the synchronous block timing inside a blended week.
An objective states what students will be able to do as a result of the lesson; an activity is what they do to get there.
- Objective: "Students will be able to compare two primary sources for bias."
- Activity: "In pairs, annotate two letters and chart differing claims."
- Assessment: a short written comparison that shows the objective was met.
If you cannot link an activity to an objective, it probably does not belong in the plan.
